What Azure Communication SMS does
The Azure Communication SMS skill allows developers to integrate SMS messaging functionality into their Java applications using the Azure Communication Services SMS SDK. This skill is particularly useful for scenarios where SMS notifications, alerts, one-time password (OTP) delivery, or bulk messaging are required. By leveraging Azure's robust infrastructure, users can ensure reliable message delivery and receive delivery reports for their sent messages.
To get started, users simply need to add the SDK as a dependency in their project and create an instance of the SmsClient. The skill supports various authentication methods, including Azure's DefaultAzureCredential, connection strings, and AzureKeyCredential, making it flexible for different deployment environments. Once set up, developers can send SMS messages to single or multiple recipients with ease, utilizing features like delivery reports and custom tagging for tracking.
The skill also provides comprehensive error handling capabilities, allowing developers to manage both individual message failures and request-level issues effectively. This ensures that users can build resilient applications that handle SMS messaging without interruptions. For those looking to implement asynchronous messaging, the skill includes an async client option, enabling non-blocking operations which can improve application performance.
Overall, this skill is ideal for developers who need a straightforward way to implement SMS functionality in their Java applications, whether for user verification, marketing campaigns, or general notifications. It simplifies the process of sending messages while providing essential features for tracking and error management.
When to use it
Use this skill when you need to implement SMS notifications, alerts, or bulk messaging in your Java applications.
When not to use it
This skill may not be suitable for applications that do not require SMS functionality or for developers looking for non-Java solutions.
What you can build with it
User Verification
Implement SMS-based user verification by sending OTPs to users during the registration process.
Marketing Campaigns
Send promotional SMS messages to multiple recipients as part of a marketing campaign.
Delivery Notifications
Notify users about the status of their orders or deliveries through SMS messages.

Delivery Reports
Delivery reports are sent via Azure Event Grid. Configure an Event Grid subscription for your ACS resource.
// Event Grid webhook handler (in your endpoint)
public void handleDeliveryReport(String eventJson) {
// Parse Event Grid event
// Event type: Microsoft.Communication.SMSDeliveryReportReceived
// Event data contains:
// - messageId: correlates to SmsSendResult.getMessageId()
// - from: sender number
// - to: recipient number
// - deliveryStatus: "Delivered", "Failed", etc.
// - deliveryStatusDetails: detailed status
// - receivedTimestamp: when status was received
// - tag: your custom tag from SmsSendOptions
}
SmsSendResult Properties
| Property | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
getMessageId() | String | Unique message identifier |
getTo() | String | Recipient phone number |
isSuccessful() | boolean | Whether send succeeded |
getHttpStatusCode() | int | HTTP status for this recipient |
getErrorMessage() | String | Error details if failed |
getRepeatabilityResult() | RepeatabilityResult | Idempotency result |

Best Practices
- Phone Number Format - Use E.164 format:
+[country code][number] - Delivery Reports - Enable for critical messages (OTP, alerts)
- Tagging - Use tags to correlate messages with business context
- Error Handling - Check
isSuccessful()for each recipient individually - Rate Limiting - Implement retry with backoff for 429 responses
- Bulk Sending - Use batch send for multiple recipients (more efficient)
Trigger Phrases
- "send SMS Java", "text message Java"
- "SMS notification", "OTP SMS", "bulk SMS"
- "delivery report SMS", "Azure Communication Services SMS"
When to Use
