What JSON Canvas does
The JSON Canvas skill provides the functionality to create and edit .canvas files, which are essential for visualizing data in applications like Obsidian. These files follow the JSON Canvas Spec 1.0, allowing users to define nodes, edges, and groupings in a structured format. This skill is particularly useful for developers and designers who need to manage complex visual representations such as mind maps, flowcharts, or other types of visual canvases.
With the JSON Canvas skill, users can work with two primary components: nodes and edges. Nodes represent various elements on the canvas, including text, files, links, and groups. Each node can be customized with specific attributes such as position, size, and color. This flexibility allows for the creation of rich visual content that can enhance understanding and communication of ideas.
Edges serve as connectors between nodes, establishing relationships and flows within the visual structure. Users can define edge attributes to control appearance and connection points, making it easier to illustrate complex interactions. The skill's adherence to the JSON format ensures that users can easily integrate their canvas files with other tools and platforms that support JSON.
This skill is ideal for anyone involved in visual data representation, including software developers, UX/UI designers, and project managers. By simplifying the process of creating and editing canvas files, users can focus on their creative and analytical tasks without getting bogged down in technical details.
When to use it
Use this skill when you need to create or modify `.canvas` files for visual data representation in applications like Obsidian.
When not to use it
This skill may not be suitable if you require advanced graphical editing capabilities beyond JSON structure management.
What you can build with it
Creating a Mind Map
Use the JSON Canvas skill to design a mind map by defining nodes for main ideas and edges for connections.
Visualizing Project Workflows
Generate a flowchart of project tasks and dependencies using nodes for tasks and edges for relationships.
Organizing Research Notes
Create a visual representation of research topics and their connections, making it easier to navigate complex information.

Overview
JSON Canvas is an open file format for infinite canvas data. Canvas files use the .canvas extension and contain valid JSON following the JSON Canvas Spec 1.0.
File Structure
A canvas file contains two top-level arrays:
{
"nodes": [],
"edges": []
}
nodes(optional): Array of node objectsedges(optional): Array of edge objects connecting nodes
Nodes
Nodes are objects placed on the canvas. There are four node types:
text- Text content with Markdownfile- Reference to files/attachmentslink- External URLgroup- Visual container for other nodes
Z-Index Ordering
Nodes are ordered by z-index in the array:
- First node = bottom layer (displayed below others)
- Last node = top layer (displayed above others)
Generic Node Attributes
All nodes share these attributes:
| Attribute | Required | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
id | Yes | string | Unique identifier for the node |
type | Yes | string | Node type: text, file, link, or group |
x | Yes | integer | X position in pixels |
y | Yes | integer | Y position in pixels |
width | Yes | integer | Width in pixels |
height | Yes | integer | Height in pixels |
color | No | canvasColor | Node color (see Color section) |
Text Nodes
Text nodes contain Markdown content.

ID Generation
Node and edge IDs must be unique strings. Obsidian generates 16-character hexadecimal IDs:
"id": "6f0ad84f44ce9c17"
"id": "a3b2c1d0e9f8g7h6"
"id": "1234567890abcdef"
This format is a 16-character lowercase hex string (64-bit random value).
Layout Guidelines
Positioning
- Coordinates can be negative (canvas extends infinitely)
xincreases to the rightyincreases downward- Position refers to top-left corner of node
Recommended Sizes
| Node Type | Suggested Width | Suggested Height |
|---|---|---|
| Small text | 200-300 | 80-150 |
| Medium text | 300-450 | 150-300 |
| Large text | 400-600 | 300-500 |
| File preview | 300-500 | 200-400 |
| Link preview | 250-400 | 100-200 |
| Group | Varies | Varies |
Spacing
- Leave 20-50px padding inside groups
- Space nodes 50-100px apart for readability
- Align nodes to grid (multiples of 10 or 20) for cleaner layouts
Validation Rules
- All
idvalues must be unique across nodes and edges fromNodeandtoNodemust reference existing node IDs- Required fields must be present for each node type
