What LibreOffice CLI does
The LibreOffice CLI provides a powerful command-line interface for creating and managing documents in the LibreOffice suite. This tool is particularly useful for developers, system administrators, and power users who prefer working without a graphical user interface (GUI). It allows users to produce real ODF files, which are essentially ZIP archives containing XML files, enabling seamless integration into automated workflows or scripts.
With this CLI, users can perform a variety of document management tasks, including creating new projects, opening existing documents, and importing files from other formats like DOCX and XLSX. The tool supports Writer, Calc, and Impress, allowing for comprehensive document editing, spreadsheet manipulation, and presentation creation. Users can also manage styles, export documents, and maintain session states with undo/redo functionality, providing a robust environment for document editing.
The CLI is designed to be stateful, meaning it keeps track of the session's history and allows for project persistence through JSON file formats. This makes it suitable for AI agents and applications that require programmatic access to document editing features. Users can interact with the CLI in a REPL mode, which supports command history and tab completion, enhancing the user experience while working in a terminal environment.
Overall, the LibreOffice CLI is an excellent tool for those who need to automate document creation and editing processes without relying on a GUI, making it a valuable addition to any developer's toolkit.
When to use it
Use this CLI when you need to create, edit, or manage LibreOffice documents programmatically or in a headless environment.
When not to use it
Avoid this tool if you require a graphical interface for document editing or if LibreOffice is not installed on your system.
What you can build with it
Automated Document Generation
Integrate the CLI into scripts to automatically generate reports or documents based on data inputs.
Batch Processing of Spreadsheets
Use the CLI to manipulate multiple spreadsheet files in a batch process without opening a GUI.
Interactive Document Editing
Start a REPL session to interactively edit documents, utilizing undo/redo features.

State Management
The CLI maintains session state with:
- Undo/Redo: Up to 50 levels of history
- Project persistence: Save/load project state as JSON
- Existing file import: Convert ODF/DOCX/XLSX/PPTX and related formats into editable project JSON
- Session tracking: Track modifications and changes
Output Formats
All commands support dual output modes:
- Human-readable (default): Tables, colors, formatted text
- Machine-readable (
--jsonflag): Structured JSON for agent consumption
# Human output
cli-anything-libreoffice project info -p project.json
# JSON output for agents
cli-anything-libreoffice --json project info -p project.json
For AI Agents
When using this CLI programmatically:
- Always use
--jsonflag for parseable output - Check return codes - 0 for success, non-zero for errors
- Parse stderr for error messages on failure
- Use absolute paths for all file operations
- Import existing Office files to JSON first with
document import input.docx -o work.json - Verify outputs exist after export operations
