What 3D & CAD Matrix does
The 3D & CAD Matrix skill provides a robust command-line interface for managing various aspects of 3D modeling, computer-aided design (CAD), and related processes. This skill integrates multiple tools, including Blender, FreeCAD, CloudCompare, and RenderDoc, to cover a wide range of capabilities from mesh modeling to GPU debugging. Users can seamlessly transition from conceptual design to fabrication, making it suitable for designers, engineers, and developers working in 3D environments.
With the ability to handle mesh editing, parametric CAD, point cloud processing, and photogrammetry, this skill is designed for professionals who require a comprehensive toolset for 3D asset creation. The matrix supports offline workflows for most tasks, ensuring that users can work without relying on internet connectivity. However, certain features like rendering and photogrammetry may require online access to specific APIs.
The skill is structured to allow users to run preflight checks to verify the availability of necessary tools and dependencies before proceeding with their projects. This preemptive approach helps in minimizing disruptions during development. Additionally, the skill emphasizes the importance of quality, offering options that range from free tools to paid APIs, allowing users to select based on their requirements and budget.
While the matrix covers a vast array of functionalities, it does have some limitations, particularly in areas like texturing and fabrication slicing, which are noted as gaps in the current offering. This makes it essential for users to evaluate whether these limitations align with their project needs before installation.
When to use it
Use this skill when working on 3D modeling or CAD projects that require a combination of mesh editing, parametric design, and point cloud processing.
When not to use it
This skill may not be suitable for users focused solely on high-end texturing or fabrication slicing, as these areas are not fully addressed.
What you can build with it
Creating a 3D Model
Use the skill to model and edit 3D assets using Blender or FreeCAD, streamlining your workflow.
Processing Point Clouds
Leverage CloudCompare or Open3D to clean and register point clouds for further analysis or modeling.
Photogrammetry Workflow
Utilize Meshroom or COLMAP to convert images into 3D meshes, integrating seamlessly with your design process.

Install
cli-hub matrix install 3d-cad
cli-hub matrix info 3d-cad
cli-hub matrix preflight 3d-cad --json
Provider selection constraints
- Use preflight as an availability report, not as a provider selector.
- Treat provider order as documentation order only.
- Choose from user requirements, output quality bar, offline needs, credential state, install cost, and provider notes.
- Escalate to paid or metered APIs only when credentials are already present or the user explicitly consents.
Offline context? Most of this matrix is offline-first; rendering and photogrammetry are the exceptions.
Preflight
Run cli-hub matrix preflight 3d-cad --json first. Use the manual block below for extra probes or older cli-hub versions.

Known gaps
material.texture— no open equivalent to Substance; Blender shader nodes are the current ceiling.fabricate.slice— PrusaSlicer/Cura natives work but want a harness-level wrapper.model.sculpt— impractical for agents today.- Unity / Unreal export — only Godot covered on the harness side.
Agent guidance
- Parametric first, mesh later. Start in
model.parametricwhen the object has dimensions;model.meshwhen it's organic. - Always bake before export. When handing off to
export.engine, apply modifiers and bake materials — runtime engines don't read Blender shader graphs. - Check manifold before slicing.
fabricate.slicefails silently on non-manifold meshes; usetrimesh.Trimesh.is_volumeor pymeshlab's manifold check first. - Offline-capable baseline. This matrix is highly offline-capable — API escalation is rarely needed except for photogrammetry-at-scale.
- Workspace discipline. Keep
.FCStd/.blend/.ply/.stl/.gcodein one project folder so the chain of transformations is reproducible.
