What Audacity CLI does
The Audacity CLI provides a stateful command-line interface for audio editing, designed to streamline workflows for users familiar with command-line tools. This tool follows patterns established by other popular command-line interfaces, such as GIMP and Blender, making it intuitive for those accustomed to such environments. With this CLI, users can create, manage, and manipulate audio projects without needing to open the Audacity GUI, which can be particularly useful for automation or batch processing tasks.
Installation is straightforward, requiring Python 3.10 or higher and an existing Audacity installation. Once set up, users can access a range of commands organized into groups for project, track, clip, effect, selection, label, media, export, and session management. Each command is designed to perform specific tasks, such as creating a new project, adding tracks, or applying effects, all from the terminal. The CLI also supports an interactive REPL mode, allowing users to enter commands directly and utilize features like tab completion and command history.
One of the notable features of this CLI is its ability to output results in both human-readable and machine-readable formats. This dual-output capability is particularly beneficial for developers and automation scripts, as it allows for easy integration with other tools and systems. Users can also take advantage of session management features, including undo/redo functionality and project persistence, which help maintain the state of their audio projects across multiple commands.
Overall, the Audacity CLI is a powerful tool for developers, audio engineers, and anyone looking to enhance their audio editing capabilities through command-line operations. It is particularly suited for those who prefer scripting and automation in their workflows, enabling more efficient audio project management.
When to use it

Create a new audacity project file.
cli-anything-audacity project new -o myproject.json
# Or with JSON output for programmatic use
cli-anything-audacity --json project new -o myproject.json
Interactive REPL Session
Start an interactive session with undo/redo support.

State Management
The CLI maintains session state with:
- Undo/Redo: Up to 50 levels of history
- Project persistence: Save/load project state as JSON
- Session tracking: Track modifications and changes
Output Formats
All commands support dual output modes:
- Human-readable (default): Tables, colors, formatted text
- Machine-readable (
--jsonflag): Structured JSON for agent consumption
# Human output
cli-anything-audacity project info -p project.json
# JSON output for agents
cli-anything-audacity --json project info -p project.json
For AI Agents
When using this CLI programmatically:
- Always use
--jsonflag for parseable output - Check return codes - 0 for success, non-zero for errors
- Parse stderr for error messages on failure
- Use absolute paths for all file operations
- Verify outputs exist after export operations
